Petroleum coke is a hard solid petroleum product that is black or dark gray. It has a metallic luster and is porous.Petroleum coke consists of hydrocarbons, 90 to 97 percent carbon, 1.5 to 8 percent hydrogen, nitrogen, chlorine, sulfur, and heavy metal compounds.Petroleum coke is a by-product of raw oil cracking to produce light oil at high temperature.The output of petroleum coke is about 25-30% of that of raw oil.Its low calorific value is about 1.5-2 times of coal, ash content is not more than 0.5%, volatile content is about 11%, quality is close to anthracite.
